Privacy Policy
German Lens (“the extension”) helps users translate and understand German text while browsing. We built it privacy-first.
What we collect
Nothing automatically. The extension has no accounts, no analytics, no advertising SDKs, no trackers, and no background data collection.
Lookup text: when you select or type a word, that word or phrase is
sent to the services that answer the request:
Google Translate (translate.googleapis.com), the German Wiktionary
(de.wiktionary.org) and, for pronunciation audio, Wikimedia Commons
(commons.wikimedia.org).
Only the looked-up text is transmitted — never page contents, history, cookies, or personal profiles.
Optional DeepL: if you configure a DeepL API key, lookups go to DeepL instead of Google; the key is stored only in your browser.
What stays on your device
Lookup cache, pronunciation-audio cache, your last 100 lookups (history), settings, the trial counter and an activated Premium license key are stored in Chrome’s local/synced extension storage on your device.
You can delete them any time: popup → “clear”, or by removing the extension.
Permissions explained
- storage — caches, settings, history, trial counter, license key (local).
- contextMenus — a “Translate selection” right-click menu item.
- Host permissions — the translation, dictionary and audio services listed above.
Third parties
Google, Wikimedia and (optionally) DeepL process the lookup text under their own privacy policies. No other third parties receive any data.
Children
The extension is a general-audience learning tool and does not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children.
Changes
